My Intentions; Midgard and other works

  • Anselm Kiefer is one of the most highly recognizable figures of the neo expressionist movement of the twentieth century. His body of work is extremely diverse in it's utilization of various materials ranging from  paint and raw lead, to acres of land. While his entire body of work to date is extremely compelling, for the purposes of this research assignment, I will focus on his landscape paintings and mixed media works of the 1970's and 1980's.

    •  I am interested in elucidating the idea that Kiefer is eschewing a position in the contemporary art worlds tendency to make commodity out of nature and thus creating allegorical re-contexualizations of classical concerns involving Landscape.

    Anselm Kiefer's Landscapes

    • My secondary interest in Kiefer's Landscapes are his use of natural materials. How does the use of earthen media relate to representations of the earth's surface, and what are the implications of its relevance to a new way of viewing the artist at odds with representing nature?
